SPACE OF FIRE

Artist Statement: Space of Fire

Space of Fire explores the timeless archetype of the primordial fire as both an active agent and a communal container. Throughout human history, fire has been the ultimate enabler—a facilitator of storytelling, a space for shared memory, and a focal point for safety and transformation. Synthesising these roles, it emerges as a divine agent of initiation, intelligence, clarity, illumination, and mystery. The artwork translates these deeply engraved cultural symbols into a hybrid reality, utilising responsive digital cues within an analogue space to evoke ancient associations and activate human presence.

Created as a site-specific response for the 2022 Catford Arts Trail, the artwork utilizes motion sensors connected to generative sound and visuals to construct a context in which people can reflect on their internal states and are actively invited to share. This sharing is not a rigid demand, but an open offering—participants might contribute a spoken story, a quiet, meditative presence, or a physical expression. Rather than functioning merely as an autonomous object, the piece creates a situation that operates as an emotional and kinetic feedback loop. As participants move, the digital fire responds in real time, serving as a temporary structure that holds their experiences as they are explored and processed. The ultimate aim is to create a vessel that can reveal internal landscapes that are normally difficult to articulate but widely felt. It is exactly this open invitation that allowed for the work’s most profound realisation, perfectly illustrated by one visitor’s encounter.

A Reflection on Practice: The Catford Arts Trail Encounter

During the exhibition, the true capacity of this interactive space was fully realized. A visitor engaged with the piece, closing her eyes and falling into a wave-like, flowing movement, visibly connecting to the generative environment. After several minutes of silent contemplation, she stopped, smiling peacefully through her tears. She shared that she was grieving the recent loss of her mother and hadn’t known how to process the heavy emotion. By connecting her bodily motion to the responsive sound, she found she could physically shape her grief and ultimately let it go. Witnessing this intimate transmutation shifted my entire practice. It was a humbling reminder that even within the confines of a machine and digital code, art can provide a vital, empathetic space for profound human vulnerability and healing.
